Banjul, the capital of The Gambia, is located on St. Mary’s Island at the mouth of the Gambia River, giving it a unique waterfront setting. Despite being one of Africa’s smaller capitals, it offers visitors a mix of history, culture, and vibrant urban life. The city’s streets and markets reflect daily Gambian life, making it an engaging destination for travelers who enjoy exploring local communities.

The Albert Market is the heart of Banjul’s activity, where vendors sell everything from handcrafted jewelry to fresh fruits and spices. Walking through the market provides a sensory experience of sights, sounds, and smells that capture the city’s energy.

Banjul’s waterfront and riverbanks offer picturesque views and leisure opportunities. Visitors can take boat trips along the Gambia River, observing mangrove-lined shores and local fishing communities. The city also hosts cultural festivals and events, providing opportunities to experience music, dance, and traditional Gambian ceremonies.

While compact, Banjul is an excellent base for exploring the rest of The Gambia. From here, travelers can visit nearby wildlife reserves, beaches, and villages, making it a central hub for both cultural exploration and natural adventures.
